On a windy Saturday afternoon in O'Shea park, a youthful Blarney (11 of 14 man squad were aged 20 or under) started off the livelier side. Some fine individual runs and good combination play led to a number of goal scoring chances only to be denied by the Douglas Hall keeper. However, with 35 mins played, Douglas Hall won possession on the half way line, broke down the wing and crossed for the centre forward to score. In the second half Blarney regained control of the game and a fine through ball from midfield found Lorcan Geaney, who rounded the goalkeeper and slotted into an empty net to make it 1-1. At this stage the Blarney defence, marshalled by Pat Doyle, kept Douglas Hall out and again played out of defence, into midfield, and then up to Lorcan Geaney, who beat the centre half for pace and calmly lobbed the ball over the keeper to score Blarney's second goal. With 20 mins of play left, Douglas Hall gained possession on the edge of the Blarney box and rifled home a low hard shot into the corner of the net. Chances were few with 5 mins left and extra time was on the cards. 2-2 aet and on to penalties. Both sides scored 4 out of 5, so on to sudden death. A great save from Andy O'Donoghue denied the Douglas Hall kicker only for the penalty to be retaken. At the second attempt, the ball was sent wide for Blarney to win 8-7 and progress to the next round of the Munster Junior Cup. Well played lads.
