Blarney Utd. V Greenwood FC - 03–Jan-15 Final Score 2-0 Today Blarney hosted Greenwood with both teams having had a very good season so far, sitting 2nd and 3rd respectably in the table. With games in hand for Greenwood however this was a must win match for Blarney if they hoped to maintain their bid for promotion. The first half was a very tight affair with Blarney just shading it and were unluckily not to have scored at least one of the chances that came their way. The second half started in a similar fashion to the first with Blarney creating the best of the chances in an even contest. The dead lock was eventually broken in the 10 minute of the second half when Jerry Murphy was pulled down in the box and Gavin O’Sullivan stepped up to slot a excellent shot in off the post to the keepers left and give Blarney a 1-0 lead. As Greenwood pressed for a equaliser, Blarney dropped deeper, despite this Blarneys back 4 of David Keane, Gavin O’Sullivan, Cian Curran, Cathal McCarthy and goalkeeper Ben Maher where in excellent form and it was Blarney who continued to carve the best of the chances on the counter attack.. The game was eventually settled 2 minutes from time when one of the Blarneys counter attacks resulted in a corner, with some neat interplay between Jerry Murphy and Cameron Lynch the ball was send across the 6 yard box and Sean Murray was there to score his first of the season and top off an very good performance from him. Having lost 5-1 to Greenwood at the start of the season the win shows how much this Blarney Utd team have improved as the season has progressed. Blarney Utd still need results to go their way in order to secure promotion and will need to get results over the coming weeks against some very good teams but this win over a very dangerous and high flying Greenwood team will hopefully give the boys confidence that they can do it as they enter this crucial stage of the season.
