Leeds V Blarney Utd 28-Feb-15 Blarney travelled to Leeds Saturday afternoon to play the league leaders who are having a great season and with the home side having one hand on the league title it was going to be a tough for Blarney to take points from this game. It was a very entertaining game with both sides working hard for 60 minutes but it was Blarney who came away with a deserved three points courtesy of a Billy O’Sullivan strike on 17 minutes. Blarney had the majority of play in the first half and with Billy O’Sullivan in great form up front he caused the Leeds defence problems with his through balls to supporting wide players Jonathan Keane and Cameron Lynch who were a constant threat with their penetrating runs inside the Leeds defence. Leeds also had some good periods of play but they could not seem to penetrate a resolute and well organised Blarney defence lead by Gavin O’Sullivan and man of the match David Keane who was not going to be beaten on the day. The first and only goal of the game came on the 17th minute when Blarney broke on the counter attack after centre half Cathal McCarthy made a great tackle to nick the ball 12 yrds from his own goal and when he played the ball out to wide player Cameron Lynch then his run down the right flank beat two Leeds players and his cross from the end line picked out Billy O’Sullivan who struck from 10yrs across the Leeds keeps to the bottom left corner to give Blarney a deserved 1-0 lead. Blarney continued to play some great football for the remainder of the half. In the second half Leeds looked for the equaliser from the whistle but their build up play could not penetrate the Blarney back four and with Jack Dennehy being the busiest at right back he stood up to the task and did not put a foot wrong with a great performance. Leeds had some chances and their best came with five minutes to go when there excellent right midfielder eventually broke through the Blarney defence on the right and his strike under pressure from 15yrds went narrowly wide to Blarney gasps. Then from an excellent low kick out from Gavin ‘O Sullivan to Cameron Lynch on the wide right his run got him free behind the Leeds defence and it looked like a second when he was one and one with the keeper only to scuff his shot across the goal and the final whistle was blown. A deserved win for Blarney. MOM David Keane
