Blarney United v Richmond

Blarney United U16, Division 1 team progress through to next round of the Local Cup after beating Richmond at home in O’ Shea Park last Sunday morning the 1st March. Blarney took an early lead on the 5th minute when Jason Hogan got the better of the Richmond defender inside the right hand side of the box and from the back line cut the ball back to Levi O’ Mahony who nicely tapped the ball in the Richmond net. With a goal down Richmond seemed to step up a gear and fought hard to beat Blarney at their game and at the same time Blarney seemed to go out of the game.On the 18th minute Richmond were awarded for their efforts with a free kick just outside the Blarney penalty box on the left hand side. The Richmond player converted the ball into the Blarney net from the free kick when he finely struck the ball over the Blarney wall into the top left hand corner giving Blarney goalkeeper Conor Hogan no chance. With the game a goal a piece Blarney seemed to get in control of the game and created a few goal scoring opportunities only to be denied by the goal keeper and twice by the uprights.

On the 40th minute Blarney’s efforts were rewarded when Declan Hanlon scored directly from a corner kick and at half time the score was 2-1 to Blarney.Blarney appeared to be more in control in the second half but Richmond continued to fight hard to stay in the game but on the 60th minute Levi O’ Mahony passed a fine ball to Michael O’ Connell who made no mistake and struck the ball into the back of the Richmond net. Two minutes later on the 62nd minute Aaron Kirby Hennessy won the ball inside the Richmond box on the right hand side and after beating the Richmond defender he tucked the ball into the back of the net to make it 4-1 to Blarney. On the 71st and 75th minute Michael O’ Connell had two more goals the first being assisted by Declan Hanlon and the second was a fine solo piece when the Richmond goalkeeper came off his goal line to receive a high ball but Michael just got there before him and lobbed the ball over the Richmond goalkeeper into the empty goal. On the final whistle the game finished 6-1 to Blarney. Man of the match has to go to hat-trick scorer Michael O’ Connell, well done.
