Greenwood 0 Blarney United 2 Today we qualified for the last 8 of the local cup with a hard fought victory over Greenwood. The conditions did not suit our game with a swirling wind and a pitch in very bad conditions but yet again credit to the lads they adapted to the conditions and came away with a 2-0 win. In the first half we were playing against the wind and for the first 10 minutes we were pinned back into our own half with Greenwood playing route 1 football they had us under a lot of pressure.

They were awarded a penalty for hand ball after 8 minutes and a great save by Robert O Gorman kept the game scoreless. In the 10th minute Josh Roberts won the ball on the left wing for Blarney and fed Scott Forrest who spotted the run of Ronan O Brien and passed a lovely through ball into him. Ronan showed great composure to beat the last defender and lob the ball over the keeper to give Blarney the lead.

Again Greenwood came at us and another good save by Robert O Gorman and some great defending by Cian Connolly denied them an equaliser. In the 18th minute Greenwood were awarded another penalty and yet again they were denied by the good goalkeeping of Robert O Gorman. The half time interval saw Blarney having a 1-0 lead.

At the start of the second half Blarney pressed hard for goal number 2 and were unlucky on a few occasions not to score it. They were well in control of the game now with Sean Keane and Michael O Mahony dominating the midfield for Blarney and Shay Dineen creating some good chances on the right wing.

With 12 minutes gone in the second half Blarney were awarded a free kick about 30 yards out from Greenwood goal and up stepped Ronan O Brien to bury it into the back of the net. In fairness to the Blarney lads they kept trying to play some decent football but it was difficult to string any few passes together with the state of the pitch. The game finished with a comfortable 2-0 win to Blarney Utd and now sets up a mouth-watering quarter final away to Corinthians.

Best for Blarney on the day were Robert O Gorman, Ronan O Brien and Cian Connolly. Well done lads looking forward to a great quarter final match!!!
